Early Spring

I've been spending a lot of time outside lately, knowing that these pleasures won't last much longer for summer time in the South has become my dreaded season of heat, humidity and I stay mainly indoors in the summer with the air conditioner humming day and night. Poor me - poor Gizzy!

I have always enjoyed walking for when I walk I often get my best ideas. It's a good time for day dreaming, pondering and musing. Seeing nature around me, observing wildlife and watching my own little Gizzy dog as he investigates every single blade of grass fills me with joy and gratitude for life and being alive. I can't help but wonder what happened to us - meaning man, in general - when did we become so superficial and self important? If that's progress, I don't want it.
I found this bitter-sweet poem very appropriate for the way I feel sometimes:
Lines Written in Early Spring
by William Wordsworth

I heard a thousand blended notes,
While in a grove I sate reclined,
In that sweet mood when pleasant thoughts
Bring sad thoughts to the mind.

To her fair works did nature link
The human soul that through me ran;
And much it grieved my heart to think
What man has made of man.

Through primrose tufts, in that sweet bower,
The periwinkle trailed its wreaths;
And 'tis my faith that every flower
Enjoys the air it breathes.

The birds around me hopped and played:
Their thoughts I cannot measure,
But the least motion which they made,
It seemed a thrill of pleasure.

The budding twigs spread out their fan,
To catch the breezy air;
And I must think, do all I can,
That there was pleasure there.

If this belief from heaven be sent,
If such be Nature's holy plan,
Have I not reason to lament
What man has made of man?

  1. Nice pictures! :) I love summer time, although it's hot, compare to the spring time with lots of rain, I'd rather like summer, hot and dry! However, I do enjoy lots of flower blooming in spring time every year, like you can fill the spring with hope and think " I can start all over again this year "... no matter what is it! LOL

  2. Gorgeous pictures. I love the last one. This sounds corny - but it just cheers me up when I see that beauty.

    I think what happened to man - oh don't getme started - is MONEY!

    Love, sandie

  3. Those pictures are just gorgeous! Did you take them?

    Chatty Crone says what happened to man in money. I don't know, I think it's that so many people have such a sense of entitlement. One of my professors talked about that same issue with one of her former students. She didn't give his name, of course, and it happened several years ago so it's not likely it'll get back to the dude.

  4. Well, this Wordsworth poem is alright, but I just saw your post below that I had somehow missed. Your haiku is so much better, I love it. It makes me really smile.
